- What will I / my child get out of your Martial Arts program?
The benefits of Martial Arts for both children and adults are numerous!
You can review our list of benefits,
as well as read testimonials
from our students and their families.
Still not convinced?
Here are few more reasons why you should train with us:
- It is easier & more fun to workout in a group or class than to work out by yourself.
- You always have a support system all around you.
- Having an instructor means you always have a trainer and personal coach.
- In a Martial Arts workout you learn valuable skills while you get into shape.
- In a Martial Arts class, you are constantly growing and learning new things.
- The stripe and belt system helps develop the habit of goal setting, which is critical to success in life.
- In our classes you learn the mindset, character traits and habits that will make you more successful in all other areas of your life.
- What style do you teach?
The Superfoot system was developed by Karate/Kickboxing living legend, Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, who retired as the undefeated world middleweight kickboxing champion. It is taught under the guidance of our head Instructor, Sensei Joel Levy, M.Ed., who is a Certified Instructor and a 6th degree black belt directly under Bill "Superfoot" Wallace.

- What is unique about FMAA?
Our school is run by a husband and wife team
who are both New Jersey State Certified Teachers
and Hall of Fame martial artists.
Our family friendly environment is a safe haven of positive energy for all who enter.
Our educational programs have been rated among the top in the U.S.
by the International Martial Arts Association.
Rather than simply dividing classes according to belt,
we teach all of our classes -- children through adults -- in a way that is developmentally appropriate and age specific.
While most schools are run by black belts,
there is a big difference between knowing Martial Arts, and knowing how to teach Martial Arts. We combine both at the highest level.
- Can I keep my current rank from another style/school?
Some skills will definitely be transferable and other skills will have to be picked up here.
When you come in to the dojo we can evaluate you over the course of a few classes and rank you according to
where you fit into our curriculum.
- Do you spar at your school?
Sparring is something that some students want to do and other students do not.
For those who want to spar, we have perhaps the best sparring you'll see anywhere.
For those who do not wish to spar it is not mandatory, and a student can become quite adept at both physical and mental self-defense without it.
- How long does it take to become a black belt?
For a student 7 years old and above who never misses a belt promotion, it would take about four years.
However, on average it takes about 4-5 years.
For a student below the age of 7, it may take a little longer.
- Is karate going to make my child more violent?
On the contrary!
Children who have a positive outlet for their energy, and who participate in activities that boost their confidence and self esteem, have proven to be less violent and more easily able to resolve conflict without fighting.
The reason is that feelings of anger and inadequacy are really what is behind most violent outbursts in children. Martial Arts gives them both a release valve in a controlled environment, and the confidence to overcome any lack of self esteem. School principals have told us that students who train at our dojo are more likely to keep a cool head in conflict than many other students in their schools.
- Am I going to get hurt?
While it is impossible to prevent all accidents in any activity,
our training methods have been thoroughly researched
and have the effect of making one less prone to injury.
In addition, because respect, responsibility and discipline
permeate the climate of our school, our instructors and students
are very safety conscious.
We are here to help you become more healthy,
and we want you in class for the long term,
so we take every measure possible to ensure your well being.
- Do I need any previous experience? Do I need to be in shape to start?
No and no.
Our goal is to help you reach your goals.
We will take you from right where you are and help you get to where you want to be.
- Do you teach self-defense?
Our entire system is based upon real experience and what really works.
There is no extra fat and nothing wasted. While our approach to teaching is very modern and our classes are a great time for everyone,
the bottom line is our students have to be able to defend themselves.
You are not going to learn fluff -- you will learn the real thing.
In addition, we offer a variety of courses in the number one liability conscious
personal protection system in the world today: CDT®.
The CDT TRAINING FOR LIFE®
Family Protection Course is an effective, realistic
personal protection system based on education and empowerment,
and it will teach you how to protect yourself and your loved ones.
The KNOW & GO® Child Safety Program
will train children in a friendly and fun environment
to recognize potentially dangerous situations and sounds,
and the proper movement to keep safe.
These courses are separate from our regular program.
- How long have you been in Highland Park?
The school started in September 1997. Classes were held two nights a week in the social hall of a local synagogue. After a year and a half we needed room to grow, so we moved to our own full time location in the basement of an art gallery. After three and a half years there, we again needed more space, so we relocated to our current location, 17 North 4th Avenue, Highland Park, NJ. We intend to continue to service the Highland Park and surrounding communities for a long time to come.
